My students need 20 scissors, 6 sets of Sharpies, 10 sets of colored pencils, 6 packs of glue sticks, 3 rolls of packing tape, 4 storage containers and scotch tape.
The Interactive Student Notebook is the main portfolio of learning in my social studies class. I have the students personalize it so they will take pride in their work and have a sense of ownership. This requires materials that many of my students don't have.
My students reside in an educated, artistic community.
The poverty level is surprising because the town is so expensive to live in and there isn't a lot of living wage jobs. Our school, being strapped for cash, has to rely increasingly on families for basic supplies. Thus, the school supply list sent out is daunting and expensive. Many kids start out school with only some or none of these supplies, then they get off to a bad start.
My Project
These resources will equalize opportunities to get a good start to the school year in my class. The Interactive Student Notebook is an over sized notebook that contains virtually everything students do in my class: Graphically organized notes, reflections, art work. The students decorate the cover with art work that demonstrates the theme of the school year - This year the theme is U.S. History from Independence to the Civil War and Civics. The first page of the notebook is a personal page that describes the student in words and graphics.
These supplies will ensure that all of my students will have the resources to create a notebook they can be proud of.
Scissors are needed to cut artwork and news/magazine clippings. Glue sticks and tape are needed to attach written and art work to the notebook pages. Colored pencils/pens are needed for artwork and differentiating ideas in the notebook. Packing tape is needed to protect the cover of the notebook from damage.
The Interactive Student Notebook is a source of pride for students who take ownership in it and a lasting record of their learning they can refer back to.
I have former students in their twenties who still have theirs! These resources will ensure more students have that opportunity.
