Middle school can be one of the most challenging times of our lives. I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to help middle school students learn and grow every day. Our school services a high poverty population. Our enrollment consists of about nine hundred thirty students, ranging from 6th to 8th grades, with a 50% free/reduced-price lunch rate.
My students have historically scored below average in reading on district benchmarks and state standardized assessments.
Because of this, they are enrolled in a program that focuses on reading comprehension.
My Project
I am requesting a dry erase small group table to help make our small group meeting times more interactive. During small group times I am working directly with students to give them in depth instruction.
Many times during this instruction, the students and I like to discuss answers to the questions that we are working on.
I usually ask students to talk quietly, so that they do not give away answers to the rest of the class, which includes, students who are working on the same content independently, or students who will be meeting with me in a small group at a later time.
In order to not give away answers in the past, I have asked students use white boards and/or scrap paper to write down their answers. The white boards became a distraction because the students who were not in small would pay attention to the white boards being displayed with answers. The scrap paper became wasteful and would create a huge mess because of how much we do discuss in small group. The whiteboard table would alleviate these problems by giving us one, central, flat location to write our discussion answers, which could be easily viewed by the small group and me, while lessening the distractions for the rest of the class.
