it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." ~Ignacio Estrada. This is the exact challenge my students face each day. They learn differently than most students and it is my duty as a teacher to go outside the box and find the ways that they learn best. I teach Pre-K students with severe and profound intellectual disabilities. They are nonverbal and some have vision impairments.
My students may have difficulty walking, seeing, hearing, and/or talking, but despite their disabilities, they challenge me every day to take them to the next level and prove to others that they are far more capable than anyone could ever imagine.
Our entire day revolves around the individual needs of each one of my students. The skills my students work on daily will impact their lives forever. I cannot begin to express how amazing it would be to use items from our projects to assist my students in meeting their goals and learning new skills that they will carry with them throughout life. Every day, we look past the disability and instead at their abilities and with this in mind, the possibilities are endless!
My Project
My students need engaging and interactive toys to play with. I teach students with severe disabilities and finding the appropriate toys for them is not always easy. These toys will be great for teaching my students cause and effect as well as encouraging motor movement.
The attractive colors, sounds, and vibrations from these toys will provide my students many opportunities for visual, auditory and tactile stimulation.
The Magical Light Show will produced beautiful colors and music when my students simply activate it by pressing the switch. This toy is also equipped with an external jack so my students can use their own capability switches to activate it. This will allow me to accommodate the toy to all of my students. The Magical Light Show will help promote sensory awareness, increase visual attention as well as listening skills.
With the Lighted Musical Tambourine, my students will be able to jingle and jangle their way to sensory satisfaction with this musical instrument that doubles as a capability switch. This toy is perfect for my students working on cause and effect. When they swipe or gently push the tambourine to feel vibration, they will see multi-colored lights flash and hear music play. This toy will also increase auditory development as well as teach music appreciation.
The Mini Dome will be the perfect toy for my students with limited mobility. By simply pressing the dome or its plate, the Mini Dome will come alive with colorful confetti, music and vibration. This toy will provide my students visual, auditory and tactile stimulation during play.
These toys would be help my students to play more independently and give them the ability to play with toys that are appropriate for them. Lastly, these toys are fun, and fun is what preschool is all about!
