Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach science to approximately 150 seventh and eighth graders. The students I teach vary greatly in ability, and previous exposure to science. They come from a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Many need a lot of remediation and support, but they are happy to work with me and their peers in order to progress.
Although they are overcoming barriers daily, they still manage to bring a light to the world that makes me smile every day!
Science reignites a spark for learning that some seemed to have lost. I am lucky to be a part of that and work with such an entertaining, funny, driven group of kids.
My Project
Interactive notebooks level the playing field for students that have below-average scientific literacy. It engages all students and leaves no one behind. In our notebooks, we create a variety of foldables to use as study tools, diagram scientific processes, cut and paste models, draw artistic representations of various processes, and other hands-on, low-risk tasks that are extremely important, yet fun, simple, and engaging.
Our notebooks are an important tool that makes all students feel like they are able to participate, including those that might typically feel intimidated by the topics or rigor of the material.
Labs are fun and engaging, group work is always a must, but these notebooks are the first step to getting buy-in and welcomes all students to the world of science and learning.
With the supplies requested, we will be set throughout the year and into next for interactive notebooks AND other activities that allow students to demonstrate their knowledge through more artistic means. We go through them quickly due to use, so any donations will be extremely appreciated.
