I teach science to over a hundred eighth-graders. Our school is a Title I school in rural South Carolina. A significant portion of the students are below the poverty level. Working in this setting has its own challenges and rewards, including many of the students not being able to provide the necessary materials for school.
Providing my students with a fun, interactive, and positive classroom experience means the world to me and when the worries of not having supplies are lifted the experience is more rewarding.
My Project
Every day in our classroom we build our Interactive Science Notebook (ISN). In order to make the notebooks fun, exciting and organized I use colored papers for different assignments. The students glue in notes, worksheets, handouts and draw images, diagram and other pictures to supplement their notes. The colored paper will be used for warm-ups, lab reports, worksheets, notes, and assessments. The students will use the glue sticks and scissors to add to their interactive science notebook throughout the school year as well.
The interactive notebooks help the students to be organized, be able to find their materials and succeed in the classroom.
In addition to our interactive notebooks pencils are always a necessity. The pencil sharpener we currently has does not sharpen well and typically 'eats' the pencil. A new pencil sharpened will decrease those frustrations and allow for more learning time in the classroom instead of fighting with a pencil sharpener.
