Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are unique in their very own way. The student population is a majority low-income African-American families. Many of our students reside in single parent homes, and 100% of the student body receives free and reduced lunch.

Many of the students struggle with the meaning of gaining a valuable education or even why they come to school but I stand firm in seeing that they learn the best they can and are able to experience life outside of this community.

Regardless of the differences that may separate the students, the school, as a whole, does everything in their power to ensure that we develop students who know how to think critically and apply their learning. Our mission is to transform a community with the theme of LOVE!

My Project

These materials are needed in my Orton-Gillingham Reading class that I have started at my school. The iPads and MacBook will be used to implement the interactive and multi-sensory approach to reading that OG pushes for. This is going to be great for the students because I will be serving students with disabilities, as well as, struggling readers and this technology allows me to fully customize lessons to meet the needs of my specific students. Students will have access to this technology all day for reading instruction and activities.

The use of this technology will allow me as the teacher to provide creative and interactive ways to introduce and re-mediate topics taught in the classroom.

Working in small group sessions like I do, keeping the students fully engaged at all times is important. I would use the iPads and MacBook to provide differentiation to students, as I instruct other students, allowing for more one-on-one time between myself and a student. There are so many educational apps created for the iPad that students will be able to access for continuous repetition in the areas where they lack skills such as phonics and comprehension. Devices like the MacBook will be used to expose students to things like the functions of a computer and typing. This is important because many standardized test in this generation are electronic. This type of technology allows for the creation of a paperless assignments, which is a great introduction to the society in which we are currently living. They will also be able to explore the world outside of their small community. Please help me to help our students gain the experience of a lifetime!
