Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Growing up in the third most diverse school district in California, my students learn from experience the importance of valuing their differences to create an effective learning community. Though they face many challenges inside and outside of school, these students are stronger than many adults I know. Daily I witness them stand up for their friends and fight for what they believe with a fierce loyalty that will make them the leaders of tomorrow - leaders their community, and this country, so desperately need.

Approximately 140 young leaders will find community in my classroom on any given school day.

Though many face responsibilities well beyond their years, I hope that they can feel at home and safe to learn within our classroom.

My Project

My students love engaging with the science concepts we learn about in class, from experiment design and cellular biology to genetic inheritance and personal health. Despite their enthusiasm, many of my students struggle to visualize the real world applications of the science concepts we are learning beyond the scope of our classroom.

Scholastic's Science World Magazine is designed with students like mine in mind: engaging all young readers by illustrating the many facets of science in the modern world.

A classroom subscription to Science World Magazine would provide each of my students with a copy of the latest issue of Science World on a bi-weekly basis. In class, we will read the stories in the magazines both independently, in small groups, and as a whole class. Partner and group academic conversations will ensure student comprehension of the material while encouraging students to critically engage with the science and language content.

A class subscription would also grant me specialized teacher access to online resources-like lesson plans, additional materials, and video content-that I will use to complement my students' classroom learning.

The majority of my students fall below grade level in reading ability. Many are also English language learners. I feel passionately about not only exposing students to the wonder of science, but about improving their reading ability and encouraging them to love reading.

A subscription to Science World magazine will help meet dual needs for my students: exposure to real-world science application and experience comprehending nonfiction texts.

Thank you for helping me meet the needs of my young scientists!
