Students at my school come from a working-class neighborhood that is very well integrated. They are every color of the rainbow and come from multiple backgrounds. One thing they have in common is that many of their families are working multiple jobs and having trouble making ends meet.
Teachers, counselors, and other staff members frequently purchase basic need items for students who are not able to receive them from their families.
This school uses a program of catching students doing the right thing. There is an ongoing conversation about "being a bucket filler" by doing good things. They receive incentive "bucks" for good behavior and deeds.
I want my students to have the same fun, exciting and wonderful experiences I had when I was in school. School should be fun and safe for all students to learn.
My Project
My second grade students need more enrichment for English language arts (ELA) lessons to be used during independent work time. In my classroom, students learn at their own pace. As a multi-aged classroom, I have students at all reading ranges, in the project based learning students will be able to work on letter sounds and recognition through technology. The children are highly motivated to work hands on with technology and they can complete many mini ELA lessons during the day. This project will help bridge the learning gap for some students. These language lessons include concepts such as sight words, read aloud, interactive animals, forming sentences and more. This project based learning will happen with an Alive rug. The rug will also help my ELL students and give them positive reinforcement that they can learn like the other students. So what does this look like? Students will be working at a station, and the alive rug will be one for my low students that need to work on letter sounds and sight words. Students will be working with an iPad to help bring this rug into a 3D augmented reality that they can see on the iPad and interact with it. When using the iPad, students can work on letter recognition, sounds, sight words. They also have an interactive booklet that goes with the lessons. Students will be working with 3D images, and the program has multiple languages for students that speak other languages.
