First grade is a fun place to be. Our students keep us laughing and learning. A day in the life of a first grader, at our school, includes silliness, curious questions, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.
Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using hands on, whole group methods.
They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.
My Project
Our focus in first grade is creating an environment that encourages children to interact with literacy. Currently, our learning environment is lacking an easel. An easel is not only a tool to teach with, but it's an interactive way for students to create reading and writing experiences. An easel would be used daily in large group reading lessons, during small group instruction and as a tool for students to create pieces of writing as a group.
By providing students with interactive reading and writing opportunities, we are building a solid foundation for their future love of literacy.
Students will be able to leave their place on the rug and experience teaching their peers. They can identify sight words in a poem, manipulate sentences strips to organize an event by beginning, middle and end or help create a piece of writing with their classmates. The possibilities are endless with the use of this tool in our classroom.
