This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As the Intervention Specialist, I work with our lowest performing students in kindergarten and first grade. We are from a small school district that borders Detroit. Many of my students started school without any exposure to letters or numbers. Some are still learning to write their names. Despite these deficits, my students are eager to learn. They love the one-on-one attention they get through our intervention time. Our hope is that with a little support, they will be able to meet grade level standards.
My Project
Fountas and Pinnell are considered to be one of best in the field of reading intervention. Our school has adopted the Leveled Literacy Intervention kits. I am looking for more ways to reach our struggling learners. An interactive read aloud is a systematic method of reading a book aloud. I will be doing all of the decoding work, which allows my students to focus on comprehension.
With an interactive read aloud, I am able to guide conversations with my students so that they can engage in strategic listening, speaking, reading and writing about text.
Often the books used in a read aloud are more challenging than a student could read independently. This helps students to boost vocabulary, promote active listening, model fluency and encourage deeper thinking.
