My students need books for interactive read alouds to teach personal narratives through reading and writing including Thank You Mr. Falker and Saturdays and Teacakes.
In my classroom, success does not look the same for every student, but every student WILL experience success. We are about to finish our procedures for reading and writing and are close to launching a new unit, but lack the necessary books to do so.
I teach third grade at a Title 1 school where everyone receives free lunch.
My students come from a poor community and for various reasons many come to school reading below grade level. They are very sweet and caring, and truly want to do good and to please others. They love reading, but many experience frustration because they are unable to read.
My Project
My students need books for interactive read alouds to teach personal narratives through reading and writing including Thank You Mr. Falker and Saturdays and Teacakes. During a read aloud, I model the appropriate way to read a book through fluency and expression. I model for students the way I think when I read and teach them strategies to help them become better readers. Not only is reading aloud beneficial, it is fun! We share the excitement and suspense of a book, laugh together, and hang on the edge of our seats together! Students are able to hear books that they may not be able to read yet independently, and are exposed to more vocabulary. They experience community as they turn to each other to discuss the book, and develop critical thinking as they are asked to write thoughts about the book.
The ability to read and write connects students and empowers them to achieve their goals in life.
If I am funded, the books will change my students' lives for the better. They will become better readers, learn to love reading, and close the gaps in their reading proficiency.
