Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students range from Pre-K through 5th grade and they all have Individualized Education Programs. The majority of my students live in lower income housing, projects, or shelters in the south Bronx, NY. These students are energetic, charming, and sweet! Many of them need additional assistance in fine motor and visual motor skills, which are some of the underlying effectors of handwriting, and classroom tool manipulation (i.e., scissors, sharpener). In addition, the students also have decreased self-regulation, affecting their ability to attend and engage in tasks for long periods of time.
I can't imagine how the lack of outdoor access has been impacting my students and will continue impacting them physically and emotionally!
It is my job to help these students to continue growing, developing and overall facilitating their success, particularly during this difficult time. With the help of DonorsChoose, it will be possible to bring these students the support they need now that the schools are closed and continue providing additional support once the schools reopen.
My Project
Since the schools closed, I have spent significant time learning new methods to support my students' skill-development using Hangout meet and Google classroom, which are the only platforms approved by the Department of Education. Before the school closed I was able to provide endless learning opportunities to my students though the use of board games, pencil and paper activities, yoga, among others.
Even though I have found new ways to continue engaging my students and make learning fun, my ability to continue challenging my students and exposing them to new learning experiences are becoming limited.
The majority of my students do not have access to toys, games, and school supplies (i.e., construction paper, finger pain, PlayDoh, etc.). Therefore I would like to be able to continue exposing them engaging activities through apps to further improve their fine motor skills, visual motor skills, self-regulation, and emotional state. I will use the apple pencil to draw on a virtual whiteboard to explain concepts, and show samples of activities they need to understand. Additionally, the iPad and pencil will continue to support their learning once the schools reopen.
