My students need art supplies and notebooks to make interactive math notebooks.

Can you remember a class in which you had to take boring notes or text books to learn? In most cases, students need to be active makers of their notes to make sense of them. Interactive notebooks are an exciting, student created documents that allow for students to better retain and enjoy learning.
The students in my classroom are wonderfully resilient, committed young people who wish for futures full of success and opportunities.
They live in a world, though, where opportunities like graduating from high school, having a career, and going to college aren't always available, and the realities of inner-city life in Illinois are harsh and unforgiving. These issues that my students face on a daily basis make me admire their commitment to their families and our community even more, and I want to be able to give my students the skills they need to progress towards a life full of success to help them uplift themselves.
This year, I am teaching in a self-contained math classroom. While teaching grade-level Algebra and Geometry can be challenging at any level, it is especially challenging for students with special needs who have less developed number sense and problem solving skills. In order to really push students towards their math goals and also give them grade level work that will prepare them for the ACT and college readiness, I need more engaging lessons and activities. One engaging thing I want to use with my students is the use and creation of interactive notebooks. We will be starting a new unit and I want to give my students a chance to make interactive notebooks for their notes. This means card sorts, graphic organizers, and activities can be glued right into their notebooks and kept. Therefore, we are asking for composition notebooks, various colored papers, colored pencils, and glue and tape to adhere our work to our books.
These hands-on notebooks will allow my students with IEPs to hold onto, process, and organize their knowledge in concrete ways to best learn.
These are skills that are necessary in order to move kids to the level they need to be at in order to be successful in their lives, high school, careers and college. Your help can make our learning environment more student and success centered and more engaging everyday!
