Interactive Notebooks to Interact with Mathematics Concepts
Help me give my students colored copy paper, glue, and tape for interactive notebook supplies. I want my students to use self-created interactive notebooks to assist them in learning, studying, collaborating, and organizing their thoughts.
My students are studying mathematics in a public high school in upstate South Carolina. They come from a variety of backgrounds, and each student has a specific learning style. While my courses are considered college-preparatory, my students each have different goals for learning. Some of my students plan to immediately enter the workforce or military upon graduation, while others plan to further their education. Therefore, my students need a variety of activities to engage them in mathematics content and real-world examples of how mathematics is applied.
I believe that students must construct their own knowledge about mathematical content through interaction with their peers, manipulatives, and real world problem solving.
My students create interactive notebooks to assist them in understanding concepts and synthesizing their thoughts. Students reference their notebooks frequently and use them as a study tool. The interactive notebook provides students with engaging activities and, when complete, serves as a portfolio of topics learned over time. When implemented correctly, interactive notebooks appeal to a variety of learning styles, foster creativity, and help students develop organizational skills and good study habits.
My Project
I am requesting colored copy paper, glue, and tape for interactive notebook supplies for my students. I want my students to use self-created interactive notebooks to assist them in learning, studying, collaborating, and organizing their thoughts. I will design and implement engaging activities for the notebooks. Some examples of interactive notebook activities include paper foldables that serve as study tools for vocabulary and formula reference, card sorting activities in which students collaborate and justify why cards should be sorted a particular way, and writing activities.
At the end of the course, each student will have a notebook that will serve as a portfolio of mathematics topics learned over time.
Students will be able to reference their notebooks throughout this school year, and I hope that they will use it again when completing future mathematics coursework.
