Our state has recently felt the effects of not only the oil and gas downturn, but also of the reduction of coal production. We are bracing ourselves for a large reduction in state and district funding in the upcoming school year(s) with the knowledge and desire to still meet student needs. These reductions have already hit my school district hard with the closure of 5 schools in the last 2 years, including the school I have taught at for the past 16 years.
The fall of 2019 has been the start of my second year at one of our city's middle schools.
This school year I have taken on a different position at the school, so I will now have the experience and joy of teaching language arts skills to over 280 6th-grade students! These students come for all different socio-economic, racial, and religious backgrounds. The biggest challenge I face is making a connection with each and every student!
Students are looking for a safe, comfortable environment that they are excited to be a part of each day! I believe this is one of my strengths as a teacher.
My Project
These materials will be used by my sixth-grade students (140 of them!) next semester to create interactive writing, literature, and informational text notebooks.
The notebooks will provide my students with an engaging way to master our common core standards - and they can be saved to be used in future grade levels.
Each student will be given a composition notebook to keep in our language arts classroom. The notebooks will be used to track the books they read during independent reading time, and keep notes on all of our priority standards. The interactive notebooks will be housed in the classroom in colored folders (a different color for each of my 6 blocks of students). These materials will help students stay organized and be successful in mastering standards.
