Mr. Dodd from Chicago IL is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need notebooks for their interactive journals, which will serve as resources for them when being introduced to and mastering a new concept or skill aligned to a CCSS, as well pencils and also erasers.

I am a second grade math teacher in a neighborhood in the far south side of Chicago. My students are a diverse group of boys and girls overcoming great obstacles- both in the classroom and outside of the classroom. Many of my students come from low-income families, that are plagued by violence in their community. This violence is the result of inequitable distribution of resources in the City of Chicago, and my students, unfortunately, suffer from this. Despite this, my students are resilient and they are hungry for success.
Despite the inequity of resources and opportunities that my students and their families are faced with outside of the four walls of my class, I want to create an environment where my students can be challenged and thrive.
My students are eager to learn new skills and concepts and often push each other's thinking through rich, authentic discussion around different texts or new concepts in math. Many of my students come in and talk about how they take the learning home with them, to their siblings or younger cousins, which reminds me that this work is generational. This work is so humbling and my students make it worth it every day!
Students will be using the notebooks to create interactive notebooks that will align with the unit of study. These interactive notebooks will serve as a resource for students to reference back when completing independent work or exit tickets. These interactive notebooks will help students become self-reliant and will provide students will definitions, models, and different strategies that we will work on in class. One of the units of study we will be working on this year will be addition and subtraction with regrouping. We will be utilizing the journals to provide different strategies that students can utilize to add and subtract by either composing or decomposing wholes. The interactive notebooks will provide students with pictorial, concrete models that will help solidify their conceptual understanding, as well as their procedural knowledge around utilizing different strategies (i.e., expanded form, arrow method, standard algorithm).
Since I will be teaching math to two classes, supplies will be scarce.
These materials will allow me to replenish materials as necessary to ensure that students have what they need to be successful.
