Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Kindergarten students are excited, active learners who love school! But this doesn't just happen; we work VERY hard to make it happen. We are constantly looking for new ways to increase their learning in a way that is fun and appropriate for 5 and 6 year old active, energetic students.
All of my kindergarten students come into my classroom ready and excited to learn.
They are just learning their numbers and how to count. By the end of the year they are adding and subtracting and counting to 100. They make remarkable progress. But it is a difficult task for many. Our district serves many students who receive free lunch, who lack an understanding of the English language, and have limited resources at home. Therefore, they enjoy exploring a variety of materials and activities in our classroom. We expect great things from our students and they work very hard to achieve them.
My Project
This year, I am introducing an interactive math journal to help document the learning process in our math lessons. These journals will include activities, models, books, and other articles that provide evidence of learning. The students will also write and explain their learning. I am expecting that every journal will be unique to each student as they explore and process and learn math in their own way. They will be using paints, buttons and pom poms to count and add and subtract. They will be using craft sticks to create shapes and to measure. They will be using pony beads to make patterns. They will also make books about math concepts to include in their journal. All of these activities will also be reinforced in various children's books dealing with math concepts. At the end of the year they will have a journal that shows amazing growth and learning that they can share with their families.
By incorporating interactive math journals in a Kindergarten classroom, the students are not only learning math skills essential to their learning, but they are also enhancing their English language skills in a fun and exciting way!
