Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a 6th grade teacher who teaches in an urban K - 8 school whose population is 95% African American. We have 99% of our students on free lunch. While about 25% of our population is designated as learning disabled, about 40 % are on grade level in reading and 31.6% are on grade level in math. I have found in the 7 years I have been teaching in this area, as well as from the numerous workshops I have been a part of, that interactive math centers increases retention as well as increases grade levels. With two computers in the classroom I will be able to place up to 6 children at a time and let them explore the numerous websites and/or programs that are out there that will help them enrich the studies in mathematics. In New York City, budgets are being slashed, teachers are being fired, and children are being deprived of the bare necessities to get a decent education. Schools are leaving our kids behind in an ever-increasing techno-world. The things we do in class help prepare students for a world that is becoming more computer-based by the minute. My students are much less prepared than those from more affluent communities where kids have better access to technology in their homes. In todays society, a computer has became a bare necessity without them a child could be placed even further behind then they already are. I work with about 60 students on a daily basis, including my after school math tutorials that I do. So not only will these computers help my own class, but definitely help the lower functioning children that I help out on a daily basis. If we are given these computers they would help increase my children's chances of opening the doors of opportunities now as well as later on in life.
