Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are full of wonder and love towards life, each other and learning. We are a Title I school with an incredible group of second grade students that bring a rich tapestry of cultural backgrounds and languages.
My Second Grade students benefit from hands-on phonics activities.
My students enjoy working with partner pairs, in small groups, one on one and as a whole class group. They are very positive, hardworking and encouraging young individuals who would like to explore the world around them.
Many come to school to have their basic needs met. Even through their adversities, they come to school with smiles on their faces and a bounce in their step ready to learn. Many of the students are several behind academically and crave to be like everyone else.
My Project
The Phonics Magnetic Word Building Boards and word building tiles will be beneficial to my Second Graders for several reasons. For example, since most of my students are English Language Learners the Phonics Magnetic Word Building Boards have corresponding pictures that will be helpful visual aids to reinforce English words. Also, these boards can be used in partner pairs, one on one and as whole class to learn, review and reinforce phonics.
The students will be able to work with concrete letters as they sound out, segment and blend together phonics sounds, blends, digraphs, consonants and vowel teams.
I am building up my classroom's resources for fun and interactive literacy activities. Our 2nd graders will benefit from the addition of the items in this project. Research demonstrates that phonics is a key component of foundational reading skills. I know from working with struggling readers that many are lacking in needed foundational skills that often come naturally through a literacy-rich home environment. Phonics is important for all early readers, but it is even more important for our students who struggle to learn to read. It is important for these struggling readers to create positive associations with the reading process through fun and interactive phonics activities such as flip books and Phonics Activity Stations, The Phonics Magnetic Word Building Boards and letter tiles.
