Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students from the greater Indianapolis region are full of love and kindness. They are the kids that make you hopeful for the future because their bright, shining love is our hope and our future.

My class is made up of just under 50% English Language Learners.

This means their first language exposure was not English.

We celebrate our diversity here and know it is a gift to have such diverse backgrounds.

More than three‑quarters of students at our school come from low‑income households. However, they come to school ready to learn and grow every day!

My Project

My students must have interactive opportunities during reading block to spark an interest in reading. Education is changing every single day, and so are the interest of my students. Students in my classroom love to build with LEGO bricks. This STEM activity can be brought into reading block by having them recreate the setting. This helps them really lock in what the setting means. It can also help with their retelling/summary skills.

Struggling readers will often go for a fun way to interact with a story that feels less intimidating than natural print.

Students will also get the chance to listen to stories while working on tracking the words in a printed book. We have been blessed with lots of books on CD and small groups sets of those books. We just need a way to listen-this is how the CD player comes in.

The storage is to help us keep our learning activities organized and safe in a busy classroom of 5 and 6 year olds. It helps us learn everything has a place and it goes back in that place when we are done. This is an important organization skill!
