Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students with special needs from 4-year old through 2nd grade. My students are enthusiastic learners and they are fun! It’s amazing to see how hard these students and their families work to meet their challenges head-on! Our school is a Title I campus which means most of our students come from low socioeconomically disadvantaged families and receive free meals during the school day. Most of my students were affected by Hurricane Harvey. Some continue to have unstable housing arrangements making life more difficult.
We focus on social skills and academics, listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Math, Social Studies, and Science are also taught. Most of the students receive additional services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech services during their school day. Each student has individual goals based on their current levels. We joyfully celebrate even the smallest victories.
My Project
The use of a mounted projector in my classroom will contribute to the enhancement of the learning environment for my students. The digital learning in our classroom is currently driven by a projector that allows us to engage the students in a learning style that can only be facilitated through this type of technology. However, the overall learning in the classroom is dampened by the physical setup of the projector. Presently, the projector sits on a table in the center of the classroom. The stationary position takes up valuable real estate in the room that restricts learning through movement. In addition to the table and projector, the cables necessary to power the projector are a safety hazard and cause a distraction in the classroom.
Receiving this grant would allow my kindergarten students to enable a learning environment with the freedom to move without safety concerns.
The projector will be used daily during all core subjects, including reading and math work stations. The students will use the projector during station time to do word sorts, spelling, math facts, and building numbers. These students, who have suffered through the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, will be excited about their new learning space. I would really appreciate your support to make this a reality for my wonderful students.
