I teach in a densely populated urban environment. My students do not get the chance to explore nature or natural environments on their own. Therefore I try and create interactive learning centers that help my students acquire the scientific skills they need to master our state content standards. These centers provide hands on learning experiences that supplement the mandated curricula. For example, during our recent unit on the solar system, the area consisted of a variety of books and photos. In addition I was able to purchase a star show that projected images of the night sky, a lunar rover sandbox, action figures of astronauts, and recordings of books and fictional science fiction. My students are all English Language Learners, and part of my instructional strategies is to include realia and visuals to aid in instruction. Since my 17 students work in small cooperative groupings with different activities, I am requesting one Portable DVD player so I can incorporate scientific visual instruction into my small group activities. The technology would allow my English learners to have better access to the core curriculum, and provide motivation and enjoyment of the subject matter.
