I teach in an urban alternative public high school in Utah. We serve at-risk youth. Most of our students qualify for free lunch. We are incredibly diverse. Over 80 languages are spoken in our building. I work with 9th-12th graders. Many of my students are teen moms.
I am a first year teacher.
Our students are mature and capable.
They understand the challenges of their environment and are eager to make a better future for themselves and their families. My students (especially the teen moms) are acutely aware of the value of education in their lives.
As a new educator, I am focused on building a classroom environment that supports learning in an engaging way. Many of our students have experienced failure at high schools in the past. I am committed to presenting the curriculum in a way that is professional and engaging. School should be both educational and fun. I want my students to enjoy their high school experience, so they will be more likely to pursue higher education.
My Project
Our school has an open enrollment policy. That means that I see up to ten new students per week. In addition, students struggle with school attendance. All this inconsistency makes assessment difficult. It is difficult to test students when they have missed instruction on the topics covered in class.
My students need a fun and engaging means of reviewing for tests. An interactive quiz system will allow students to interact in the classroom as they review. Students will also form solidarity and camaraderie with their peers as they support each other in learning.
Help me make learning fun and exciting for our students.
An interactive quiz system will allow students to work cooperatively while retaining the concepts presented in class.
When students have enjoyable experiences at school, they are more likely to attend and more likely to succeed. Your generous donation will allow our students to experience success.
