Interactive iPad to Support Distance Learning for Special Ed
Help me give my students an iPad and protective case so that I can present them with various apps apps and games during virtual speech support sessions.
My students and their families have been hit hard by the school closures due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many of my students do not have access to printers, computers, or even internet service in their homes. This poses an extreme challenge when it comes to continuing to provide effective language and speech support as a district speech therapist.
My students who have attentional limitations secondary to disabilities such as Autism are particularly impacted by the school closures.
Their disabilities impact their ability to meaningfully interact with a live speech therapist on a computer screen.
In a short period of time, families and teachers alike have had to adapt to new technologies and new expectations. This is all while juggling daily life challenges to pay the bills and put food on the table. It has been difficult to provide consistent support to families who already have so much on their plate. It is my job to find a way to provide speech and language support in a way that best meets my students' unique needs.
My Project
My special needs students respond to technology in engaging ways. Most of our speech sessions during regular school days would involve hands-on materials to support learning. However, given these new circumstances with school closures due to COVID-19, I can no longer provide my students with hands-on materials. As such, I need to adapt and find new ways to keep my students interested and engaged during live speech support sessions.
An iPad would allow me to effectively engage my special needs students in communication-based activities during school closures.
Using an iPad, I can search, share, and use various apps and websites to provide speech and language support in fun and innovative ways during virtual speech support sessions.
