I teach ELA, Reading and Social Studies to a total of forty-five diverse, delightful 5th grade students. Not only do my students come from varying ethnic, and academic backgrounds, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. Stepping into the classroom, one will observe, ESOL, Gifted Special Ed and General Ed students conversing in small groups, individually tackling a skill, or working cooperatively with a partner, as they conquer the daily skills set upon them. They blend together marvelously as they learn, play and plunge into their daily assignments together.
My Project
Imagine how much more engaged social studies students would be if they could learn about a concept or historic event in the context of an interactive learning experience. Beyond the engagement factor, having students consume interactive non-fiction works while addressing the Common Core State Standards for reading comprehension, point of view, comparing and contrasting as well as critical thinking, problem-solving and decision making is important. My class will be able to experience such engagement with the purchase of An Interactive History Adventure (You Choose: History) Books!
After reading the Interactive History Adventure on the Civil Rights Movement, the students must decide if they will work for or against the desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas?
Help desegregate bus lines as a Freedom Rider? Get involved in the Project C protests in Birmingham, Alabama?
On average, each book has about 3 story paths, 35-45 choices, and 15 different endings. This series will help students see historical events in a new, real way and is just plain fun to read. There is no better way to understand History than to put the students in the middle of the action. The Choose Your Own Adventure experiences will immerse them in the drama while providing greater understanding of this world changing event. .
