In New York City the theme for our third-grade social-studies curriculum is world communities. Last year we had some great experiences studying Mexico, China, and South Africa through books and a few field trips. In the classroom, however, our resources are lacking. One very important part about studying the world is the ability to use maps and globes to teach geography skills. I am asking for three Leapfrog interactive globes to enhance the social-studies curriculum in my classroom. As a third-grade teacher in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, I see my students as energetic learners who do not have the same access to materials as students in higher-income areas. At home many of my students are not exposed to interactive learning toys that enhance their educational experience. In addition, many of my students do not travel very often and have limited experiences of the world. These interactive globes provide geography skills, as well as teaching children facts about animals, places, and people in an engaging format. These globes would not only provide my class with these learning experiences for years and years to come, but would be shared with the other third-grade classes, benefiting nearly one hundred children each year. I try to make learning fun and challenging for my students. I know they would not only enjoy the Leapfrog interactive globes, but learn new things to develop curiosity and the desire to keep on learning!
