My students need a document camera with a cart that will allow them to be interactive and engaged with the English language and show what they know in a new way.
Imagine a classroom where all students are able to receive personalized and hands on learning, based on their needs. Writing and grammar are so important, especially with Common Core, and the document camera will allow for teachable writing moments. This will allow for so many writing opportunities!
The students at our school deserve the best education they can get.
This is often a challenge in low-income areas, and so it is up to the teachers to provide fun and engaging opportunities to learn in the classroom. I personally feel that writing is important, both for college and for those that go straight into the workforce; I want to provide them with the skills they need to thrive. Our school is a free, public charter school so we have students from all over the county and from all walks of life. These students all come to our school because they know they have teachers that care and want to help them succeed. I want to help these students by engaging them in English and making writing fun. The document camera could help me reach so many more students and help them challenge themselves to grow as writers.
The document camera, and cart for it, will help the students become involved in the writing process. One of the ways I plan to do this is by allowing students to use the document camera to show off their writing samples to the class; that's a great way to build confidence in our students. Another activity that involves the students and the camera is having students come forward and edit writing samples with the help of the class. Such great teachable moments are what teachers look forward too. The document camera will also help save time and paper--instead of making copies for every student, some activities can just be projected from the document camera onto the screen, and students can participate in the activity from there. I also plan to use the document camera for daily warm ups as well. For instance, I will post a picture and have students write their daily journal reflecting on the picture. The possibilities are endless.
Donations for this project will help make writing more fun, engaging, and interactive.
Students often view writing as boring or a punishment, and I want to change that stigma. The students will gain valuable writing skills that they will be able to carry with them, whatever walk of life they choose. I look forward to exploring all the different creative uses for a document camera, and know that it will be such a useful tool.
