My students attend a public high school of over 2,000 students in a large urban city. While the city itself is experiencing a lucrative tech boom, most of my students have not benefited. Over half of the students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch, and I see families displaced out of their homes or the city entirely yearly.
Yet, my students come to school every day with the desire to learn.
My Japanese students voluntarily chose one to study of the hardest languages because they have curiosity for a culture and country so different yet heavily intertwined with ours. My Teacher Academy students have an interest in working with youth and deepen their understanding of education, family and child service careers by studying Child Development and interning once a week at neighborhood elementary schools.
Educational technology is ever-evolving, yet my students don't always have access. Students in the tech hub, that is our city, needs access to be able to keep up with the global world!
My Teacher Academy students will be the educators of tomorrow.
Interacting with some of the newest educational technology will allow them to think broadly about how they structure their own future lessons. Some of the elementary school classrooms they work in for their weekly internships already have interactive whiteboards. Having access to one in their own high school classroom will give students the opportunity to become comfortable with the technology and effectively incorporate them into their teaching strategies.
Meanwhile, interactive visuals and participatory lessons will help my Japanese students make language gains in a more engaging environment. With the wireless function, students can easily throw up work in their own Japanese handwriting from their smartphones onto the board. They can collaboratively annotate more difficult blocks of text to make meaning, which I can then save and upload for students to review later.
