My students need picture books, a 3M post-it pad, and toothpicks and bubble gum for model building in order to understand how Economics and Civics are intertwined with each other, impacting our world every day!
Remember when you first learned about Civics and Economics, yet you could not fully understand the connections between the two? This interactive project seeks to give students hands-on learning materials that showcase how Civics and Economics are intertwined and impacting us every day!
We are in a rural, poverty school district, and we are full of bright and engaging ideas; we truly want to learn!
We just need the creative educational tools to reach the high-level of learning that we want to achieve. Our classroom is a constantly interactive learning experience, and this project will continue the tradition of hands-on learning in the classroom.
My Project
Picture books will be used to build a base of understanding about the platforms of Civics that our standards focus on: government, citizenship, and immigration. Too often, it is assumed teenagers do not enjoy being read to, yet nothing could be further from the truth! My students love learning about social studies with picture books, and they form some of our strongest connections to the material. After we use the picture books to form a solid basis of understanding, we will use the books to take our knowledge further and tie these Civics concepts into economics: immigration, government, and citizenship as they relate to economics will be incorporated through the use of the picture books. The yellow sticky notes allow students to visually express their knowledge. The toothpicks and bubblegum will be used to build a visual model of the Capitol Building, which stands as a symbol of both government and economics coming together. All of this works to tie together Civics and Econ.
Donations to this project will improve the classroom and change students' lives for the better by giving students the ability to participate in hands-on, interactive learning experiences!
Students want to be active participants in the learning process, and with these tools students will be given that ability. What a difference hands-on, interactive learning can make for our students, who truly want to grow and learn!
