I work with students in a special education classroom. My students are struggling learners. They are in 2nd grade and require different instructional tools that help repeat skills they may have not mastered. They have weaknesses in reading, especially decoding skills and a weakness in sight words. The students are in my classroom for reading intensive support.
This year we have only been in school for 11 days due to Hurricane Florence and it is now the middle of October with no definite return date to school.
Our school was affected by hurricane Florence causing water damage which has caused our school to be unsafe to return. When my students are able to come back to school they will be even further behind in their reading skills.
My students have many different cultural backgrounds that are combined together in our classroom in a school that is considered a high poverty school.
Each and every one of my students love to learn and work very hard to succeed.
By the end of the year, my goal is to help them move closer to their goals and closer to grade level expectations in reading.
My Project
My 2nd grade students need additional reading intensive support and Explode the Code workbooks and lessons will help boost my student's decoding skills to improve reading fluency.
Explode the Code Explode is a research-based, multi-sensory program geared to improving literacy with direct, systematic, phonics instruction.
These lessons and workbooks will give my students abundant practice and reinforcement opportunities for greater retention. This program also helps to develop comprehension skills through reading in context. I will be able to use this resource to supplement the research based program I use in reading and give my student the boost in decoding skills they need.
