My students come from a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. In addition, the spectrum of individual and special needs within my student population is quite widespread.
Being that the pre-existing knowledge and prior experiences that my students have come into this school year is so varied, I have been inspired and worked hard to enrich their lives and beginning academic careers by bringing as much of the outside world in to them as possible.
It is important to me that I foster as many rich opportunities to age-appropriate visuals, projects, experiences, etc., as I can in order to relevantly connect my students to content.
My Project
Current standards are rigorous, even in kindergarten. Yet, five and six year olds need (and love) to create. With this in mind, we do a lot of arts integration in our learning community. I love to find ways to tie the creative arts into content anywhere I can, especially language arts, math, and social studies.
For this project, I chose a couple of items that my littles and I will put to great use each and every week of this school year, and for years to come.
Our current paint brushes are used, worn, and have been "shedding" bristles with every painting project for at least a year. The new set would provide us with quality brushes that will no doubt work perfectly with little hands to create beautiful pieces that enhance CCSS lessons in literature, addition, and America's holidays, as examples. The space-saving art rack will be a HUGE help in giving our masterpieces a safe place to dry in our small classroom.
The overall majority of Kinders are enthusiastic about art. These wonderful additions to our classroom would really go a long way to efficiently facilitating many, many fun and educational painting activities.
