Integrating the Arts - Science & Photography

I teach 5th grade science at a Title 1 magnet school in Arkansas. As a Title 1 school, a majority of our students are on free or reduced lunch, and many of these students are economically disadvantaged. I am the only fifth grade science teacher at my school with inclusion classes, which means that special needs children are integrated into the classroom. Within our magnet school there are 3 academies: international studies, sciences, and art. In the art academy, we integrate art curriculum into our core subjects.

Many of my students chose the arts academy because they enjoy art, and what that means for me is that most of my students are visual and tactile learners. They learn by seeing and doing.

Using a camera to capture their activities is a great way for students to remember what they've learned. By displaying photos around the classroom, the students are reminded of the learning activities and will say things like "remember when we did that and we learned about [insert science concept]." If the students are involved in taking the photos, they would be more invested in the activity and the results. Also, by teaching basic art and photography concepts - like visual composition, camera operation, and digital imaging - we can empower these students with job skills they can use later in life.

With your help, these students can really embrace the arts and develop skills that will help them in their education and beyond. They will also create lasting memories of their experiences.
