I teach 4th, 5th and 6th graders in a dedicated science lab where we do experiments and explore science with hands-on activities for two hours each week. I love my job because I am able to help students understand the science in their textbook and make meaningful connections.
My students are fortunate to have the opportunity to interact with science through hands-on lessons designed to spark their interest and curiosity about the world around them.
My science lab supplements the science content reading done with their classroom teacher. I also serve as a science resource for the students and staff at our elementary school. The population at our school is amazingly diverse, coming from all over the world seeking a world-class education. Some have incredible technology resources at home, and others have minimal access outside the school day. It is this discrepancy that may be overcome when teachers have the access to classroom technology they can share with students.
My Project
Currently, I have one teacher computer with a projector for presenting lessons. When my students ask complex questions I either have to stop the lesson to search using our one available computer, or put them off. By having a tablet with Internet capability, individual students could pursue their question and present additional information to enhance the class understanding of the lesson. The best classroom discussions occur when students take ownership of their learning and having a student tablet would be an important start.
My students would gain immediate access to additional web based science resources and be able to find answers to questions that intrigue them.
Students need technology that is accessible when they have questions, and that capability could come with your donation.
