This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Getting students to explain how they got their answers is like pulling teeth and I am not a dentist! The new standards are not only requiring students to solve problems, but students are required to write their reasonings logically and thoughtfully to prove why they are correct and incorrect.
Title 1 math is used for students lacking in certain skills.
90% of the students are 1-2 grade levels below grade level in the areas of numbers and operations, algebra and algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement and data. Our urban school is located in the heart of Ohio. Title 1 math includes students from kindergarten through second grade. Each small group pullout is between 5-7 students, Making it a more conducive learning environment for struggling students.
My Project
Hearing the teacher everyday gets tiring and reading from worksheets everyday is boring. When we have a listening center and read-alouds specifically for math, students will be able to listen to the story and logically think and discuss the problem at hand. The problem solving journals will help guide the students along in their thinking and begin to let the students write and solve problems. This will also spark discussion and sharing within our mathematic community.
Donations for this project will create a sense of community in our classroom and allow students to use reading, writing, logical thinking , listening and sharing all in mathematics.
