This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Students need literature that connects their lives to the everyday math and science that they experience. I teach first grade at a Math Science magnet school that doesn't receive additional funding for its program. As a result, our students don't get to use materials that can be integrated into different areas.
Many of my students come from high poverty areas throughout the city and have little experiences with the terminology that gets introduced in the classroom. These stories will expose the students to the correct terminology and help them form connections to what they already know.
These literature books will connect our Reading, Math and Science curriculum in a way that only good literature can. It helps give students background knowledge and promote higher thinking skills. It also allows students to obtain more information that will help them make connections with the world around them.
With your help, I will be able to integrate all subject areas and make learning more meaningful.
