My students need 25 yoga mats so they can learn and practice mindfulness. This will be used in counseling sessions.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The challenge of leadership for many of my middle school students, can be summed up with this quote "Be strong, but not rude; be kind but not weak; be bold; but not a bully; be humble; but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant" by John Rohn.
I am a middle school counselor in Washington Heights, who services 395 students.
Many of my days consist of dealing with behavior management needs in and out of the classroom. I would like to teach the students Mindfulness (Mindfulness is a particular way of paying attention. It is the mental faculty of purposefully bringing awareness to one experience. Mindfulness can be applied to sensory experience, thoughts, and emotions by using sustained attention and noticing our experience without reacting.) The application of mindfulness by students and educators has the potential to improve academic achievement, mental health, and inter- and intra-personal relationships. I would like to work with a class of twenty five sixth grade students.
My Project
I would like to get yoga mats for my students to help them with Mindfulness. Today kids are under so much pressure now, with testing culture and regular day to day pressures. Mindfulness helps with focus, attention and calming the emotions. In using the yoga mats and practicing mindfulness I can help equip my students for the world they are growing into by giving them tools to identify and cope with their own feelings, to be still and attentive to what is going on around them. Eventually I would like to build up this program for the whole school by having peace corners an area in the room with yoga mats. Students can go there to "take five" when they are feeling overwhelmed by their feelings or unable to manage what is going on in the class.
My project will make a difference because the benefits of mindfulness are manifold:
Better focus and concentration
Increased sense of calm
Decreased stress & anxiety
Enhanced health
Improved impulse control
Increased self-awareness
Skillful responses to difficult emotions
Increased empathy and understanding of others
Development of natural conflict resolution skills
