Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With technology at their disposal around our school, unfortunately PreK students do not have access to technology here. The integration of technology a learning device that can provide individualized and appropriate learning experiences for all young children.
My PreKindergarten classroom consists of 18 students ages 4 and 5.
We are located in a poverty stricken, low-income urban environment. Our PreK class is located in portable trailers attached to the main building by a hallway. At this time, prekindergarten students do not have access to technology at all. Computer and Internet access in our school is limited to 30 slow functioning hard drive desk tops in the library. Grades K-8 have access to 2 to 3 computers in each classroom, but not all are not available to us. Many students only have access to technology through parents' smart phones, although most are not utilizing it for learning.
My Project
Tablets offer an opportunity to enhance our students’ learning with the direct and effective use of an easy to use and highly interactive technology tool. Students will be able to use the hand held devices that can be tailored to their individual learning styles that will encourage the development and mastery of new concepts such as focusing on reading (the alphabet, phonics, sight words, children’s books); math (numbers, shapes, patterns, measurement); the world around us (basic science and social studies); & art and music.
The use of ABC Mouse application is step-by-step pathway curriculum program geared toward this age group and include immediate feedback, scaffolding of learning, and engaging and interesting visuals and with an option of progress monitoring.
Young children learn through cooperative activities that require visual, auditory, and concrete experiences.
Young students need multiple opportunities of exposure for new concepts that are part of early literacy and numeracy learning. Students will work at their own pace with facilitation from teacher. Implementing the use of tablets during shared small group activities will encourage using visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles and technology awareness.
