Integrating Art in Science

The cost of 7 one lb. bricks of modeling clay in several colors from Carolina Biological Supply Company and 45 other various art supplies such as styrofoam balls, a clay cutter and modeling tools set, glue, and drawing paper from Nasco is $558, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

I would like to integrate art in my teaching of science. We do not offer any forms of art to any of our high school students. I teach applied biology, biology I and physical science. All of our students are at-risk students. They are at our school for a variety of reasons (dysfunctional families, drug use and inability to control anger are some of the reasons). Our school is a state agency that provides services to students and their families. Students live on campus and go home from time to time depending on their behavior. They spend most of their time in behavior management. They do come to school daily, but many times they are gone out of class to receive special services. Most of their learning happens in class. I try not to assign homework, because many times they are not able to do homework. I teach close to 50-60 different students every year. My smallest class has 2 students and the largest class has 13 students. We all learn the best in different ways. I try to facilitate all kinds of minds. When it comes to making models of some kind, I just use construction paper because that's what is readily available to me. I believe that if I let my students create 3-dimensional models they will have better understanding of concepts. The use of different media for different activities (models) will keep their interest up. There are a wide variety of coloring books available in the market. I would like to have some of those for my biology classes. Diagrams pretty much summarize all the concepts that are mentioned in a particular chapter. Students don't really spend time looking at a diagram. When they are asked to color something, they spend time with the diagrams and learn the structures as they spend time coloring them. We do some experiments in class. Students do learn a lot through experiments. Some students find cell processes extremely boring. Even after spending weeks on cell processes, they have a hard time remembering the processes. I believe that if students are allowed to create something artistic that resembles the processes that go on in cells, they will have an easier time remembering them. Also, their involvement will make it more interesting for them. Some students do not understand the cell cycle. They have a general idea but have trouble remembering the details of the process. If I am able to teach them the cell cycle using different media, they will remember it and will be able to show their understanding in one way or another. Above are described just a couple of examples where I can integrate art. There are many other science topics that will become easier for my students if I am able to integrate art in my teaching. I would like to have all sorts of media available to my students so that they can use their imaginations to present the science concepts. This way they can create something the way I want them to and also use their own creativity and imagination.
