Integrating Art across the Curriculum

My students need 20+ supplies, including printmaking tools, brushes, acrylics, papers, beads, wire, clay and basic art supplies.

My Students

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand."-- Albert Einstein Yet state testing requires only knowledge and not creativity.

My classroom is a gender-separate combination classroom of 33 fourth and fifth grade girls.

The structure of our classroom, from lighting and temperature to desk arrangement and instruction, is catered to research-based, girl-friendly preferences. Our school is a high poverty, high performing place. As I made plans to respond to female friendly instruction in math, science, social studies and literacy, I realized that my girls need more creative opportunities to develop their imaginations and to work at higher cognitive levels than required by state testing.

My Project

These materials will provide five art experiences. Three of the projects explore student identity through the writing process integrated with the arts as the girls express their values, ideas, and experiences through visual means and poetry. These projects include a sculpture, a beaded name decoration and a print block poster. The other two projects correlate with our studies of Native American culture and the Westward Movement. The girls will design a Native American story necklace in response to a myth and a quilt block collage that expresses a sense of place and heritage.

I want my girls to long remember their 4th/5th grade experience and the meaning we attached to our projects through artistic exploration and academic inquiry.

I want them to realize their self-worth and the importance of creativity and critical thinking as they move into a world which requires creative problem solving.
