When I began considering teaching kindergarten in Oakland, I envisioned a diverse community of dedicated educators and parents. It has been an absolute joy to discover that the school I teach at is exactly that place. My class is composed of children from all backgrounds, and our experience is enriched every day by the community that supports our learning.
My students already possess an incredible love of learning and enthusiasm.
They make my work a labor of love and a very special part of my life. Knowing the dedication, skills, and resources I engage in our classroom will have a lasting impact on my students' lives challenges me to bring my absolute best to our classroom, everyday.
Kindergarten is the beginning of my students' elementary school experience, and the tools I teach will continue to impact their lives enormously. In kindergarten, we learn the building blocks of our world - how to confidently and creatively problem solve, how to care for each other, and of course, how to learn from each other. I learn from my students every day. I know with enough persistence, support and resources ALL of them will leave my classroom, on their way to challenging and fulfilling academic careers.
My Project
This project will help cover the cost of registration for a workshop sponsored by the Integrated Learning Department. The Integrated Learning Department promotes project-based learning to improve student engagement, understanding, and performance across subject areas. They train and support new and veteran teachers to infuse creativity, technology and service learning during the school day. Their department also collaborates with school districts and community partners to build and sustain positive and healthy school environments.
Project-based learning is a fundamental part of early education.
It engages students and allows access to curricular material for different types of learners. With this workshop, I hope to better engage and support my students by drawing on their natural curiosity and interests. They will learn math, science, reading, and writing in the context of a subject that interests them.
