My Students

My students are extraordinary! I teach elementary music in Austin, Texas and have been blessed to do so for 27 years! Our school receives Title I funding, because 96% of our students live in poverty.

My students have so many talents that they aren't even aware of yet!

With that being said, it is very hard for them to get supplies for music class in a normal year. In the midst of COVID-19 the challenges are even greater! Distance learning is making it harder than ever to create meaningful lessons for our students.

These students need to know they can do and be anything as long as they reach for the stars. Music supplies are cost prohibitive, and are not seen as a necessity for many of our families who struggle to make ends meet especially in these trying times! I have a lot of hurting, creative souls in my class and I want to offer them every opportunity available.

My Project

All of my students are desperate to learn to play instruments. The need for at home learning has made students feel cut off and isolated from the world. Being able to connect through playing songs on instruments is an amazing way to engage all of the students immediately! The older kids are learning recorder and the younger students at my school are able to play and sing many songs and games using rhythm sticks. We can improvise instruments out of household items, but there's no substitute for a real instrument!
