Help us keep our instruments from sliding away! My orchestra students, violin and viola players, need access to proper and essential supplies. They need shoulder rests to help to support the instrument while also aiding the student to maintain proper posture.
The students that will benefit from these shoulder rests are in third through eighth grade.
They are excited and eager to learn the basics of music through their participation in orchestra. Our school is approaching thirty years old, with much of our equipment nearing the end of its useful life. These students are willing to practice their instruments at home, but without shoulder rests this becomes a difficult task. Students can quickly pick up bad habits and develop back and neck pain from not holding their violin or viola properly.
My Project
The shoulder rests will allow my students to be fully engaged in orchestra class and develop their practice skills at home. Without shoulder rests for the students to use, their skill acquisition will be greatly diminished. Proper posture is essential to learning an instrument, and without a shoulder rest the task of holding a violin or viola correctly for an extended period of time is difficult. Without this equipment the students will progress slower and increase the likelihood of neck and back stress.
The contribution of these shoulder rests will not only positively affect the performance of the orchestra as a whole, but also the individual player.
Music classes not only reinforce group dynamics, they also foster individual growth. Without this equipment the students will take longer to progress. New and working equipment will energize the students and help them to continue their involvement in the music program. What better gift than the gift of music?
