My Project

Our music room is blessed to have an array of instruments for students to play as they sing and dance. And to mirror the diversity of the students in our classroom, we'd also like to include a more global representation of the instruments we play.

Adding steel drums to our classroom will introduce students to the music of Trinidad and Tobago, it's history, and it's future!

Much of the music prepared for elementary classrooms is Eurocentric and we want to explore the ENTIRE world of music, being exposed to many histories, styles, instruments, and peoples. With how global our world has become, especially in the wake of COVID-19 and our reliance on the internet, our students need a better understanding of the people and their culture around the world.

Adding just 3 steel drums to our instrumentarium will give students 1st hand experience of what music from the small island of Trinidad and Tobago is like an will be a gateway for discussion about people different than the majority of the students who live where we live. Help our classroom music teach empathy and diverse music!
