Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are super energetic about learning to play an instrument or sing. For many of them this is their first experience in a real music class and I want to make sure they have what they need. The students absolutely love these classes as is evident by our continued growth.
We service a diverse population both socioeconomic and ethnically.
Some of these students can afford to buy/rent their own instruments and supplies but many need assistance to do so. We want to be sure all students who want to take music are able to at our school. We have over 180 students in music classes at our school with numbers increasing each year. Students participate in fundraisers throughout the year to buy/repair instruments and buy new supplies as well as put on concerts and trips. The advanced band and choir attend adjudicated festivals to highlight their skills all covered with fundraising money. The best part of my day is seeing the joy on their faces when they play and sing their music never knowing they could and then seeing their parents blown away at our concerts. Help us continue to provide this service to these wonderful boys and girls.
My Project
The saxophones and clarinets need reeds to play which only last a couple weeks. The reed is the small wooden piece that is placed on the mouthpiece and creates the sound when students learn to properly produce a sound. These reeds will be given to those who struggle to afford their own reeds so they can continue to learn to play their instruments.
Studies have shown that music is beneficial to brain development because it uses both sides of the brain at the same time.
The left side of the brain is used to read the music and recall what keys/valves/etc... to push for each note and how long to play them while the right side is being used to add expression and feeling to the sounds creating music. We fundraise for everything including reeds and this donation will help us provide reeds to all those students needing who can't afford them.
