This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach special education students with severe and profound disabilities. My students are in grades kindergarten through fifth and stay with me until they go to the middle school. This year, I was also appointed the resource teacher for students that are learning on the same grade-level as my full-time students. Since I have the same students every year, we are a family. My children are very special and learn better with hands-on activities. Some children cannot retain information, but most of my students are learning on a pre-kindergarten or kindergarten level.
Most people do not believe that my students can learn because of their severe learning disabilities, but my students are capable of everything.
They are most appreciative of the smallest of things.
My Project
We have made some headway in our class activity centers, but we still have a ways to go. We were blessed by donors to help with the beginning and basic activity centers to start my students on their journey to reading. Now we must keep on moving forward, so they are able to learn the next steps in reading.
My students need the Ending and Middle Sound learning center to complete the basics of CVC word learning and the Reading Comprehension and Punctuation and Capitalization learning centers to help improve not only their reading but writing abilities.
I have gotten new students for this coming up year, and their learning levels are getting more advance than the basic concepts on sequencing and rhyming. I have been given the responsibility of being the resource teacher, so these students are not as severe as my normal roster but still have trouble learning at their grade level. It is my job to help them advance as far as they can to help them remain in the general education setting.
