My students are scientists! Each year we learn about the marvel that is our universe; following experiments that teach about the planets around us, our own Earth and the life on our Earth. Accuracy and the use of real tools are important parts added to the scientific process we practice daily.
All children are scientists, it is an important job as educators to continue to inspire this innate ability children have to look at our Earth with awe and wonder, and to teach them what an important part every organism plays.
My classroom follows the Montessori philosophy where students receive a lesson and then continue their learning even deeper through independent practice with the materials.
The students in my classroom are inspired by the lessons and the materials they work with every day. They are enthusiastic to add to their learning. They often ask ,"why" or "how" and then have the confidence and ability to find the answers to those questions with guidance from me and the appropriate use of accurate scientific materials and information.
My Project
Students will be using all of these materials to help build their scientific knowledge.
Microscopes and prepared slides will be used to study that which we cannot see with our naked eye. The awe and amazement young students have as that tiny world is opened to them through the view of a microscope is inspiring to even seasoned teachers.
Timers and thermometers will be used in experiments about processes and change. Petri dishes will be used to help house these experiments safely and have examples for comparison and continued study.
Students will be learning as a whole group and in small groups, giving more time for practice, study and experimentation. I am asking for multiples of each material to let children work in these smaller groups, so each can have a turn with ample time, while I supervise the whole class.
Inspiring students to engage in scientific study is important for academic progress and for life long skills.
Helping students to understand the tools of science with hands-on practice in the classroom is an important step in the process of academic growth.
These materials will help my students over multiple years to become confident scientists.
