Our school is located in a small, rural community. Our kindergarten classroom is a warm, inviting, and literacy-rich environment that is ideal for young learners.
Our class is made up of twenty students with a very wide range of abilities and interests.
Differentiation is a must to meet the needs of all learners in this diverse classroom. It is my hope that I can challenge and support each student based on their individual needs and instill in each of them a love for reading that will continue beyond their first year of school.
My Project
From a very young age, children are read nursery rhymes, fairy tales, and other types of fictional stories. Very little time is devoted to reading informational text, but early exposure to this type of writing can prepare them for the great literacy demands they will encounter later in their education. Reading informational text can also help children develop more complex thinking, boost vocabulary, and prepares them for real-life reading skills that they will need to succeed later in life.
The best thing we can do for beginning readers is get books into their hands!
Students in my classroom are given this opportunity on a daily basis, but our classroom library is lacking quality informational texts at the students' reading levels. I'm requesting Nonfiction Sight Word Readers Book Tubs to provide my students a variety of leveled books.
My students are eager to read and have a natural interest in learning about the world around them. I hope to encourage their fascination by providing these books that will meet their different reading needs and interests.
