Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations-..." Katherine Patterson. The students in my classroom have not been exposed to reading and all of the excitement it brings. Help me exposed them!

Our school is located in a large city in Virginia.

90% of the students who attend our school live below the poverty level. Students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of the students do not own books and have not been introduced to the library. They are eager not only to learn, but also to become better students. It is important to begin to teach the students at an early age to utilize all the resources that are available to them.

My Project

Scholastic's Let's Find Out (Weekly Reader) and Science Spin magazines will be additional teaching tools by which my students will be exposed to new concepts, topics, and ideas. In addition to the magazine, students have access to the website for further information, games, activities on the weekly topic. Once the class is logged into the site, students follow along with the text as each sentence is read. Afterward, they may watch a video and play a game related to the story that is highlighted for the week. They may also engage in an activity that re-enforces the discussion.

Using Scholastic's Let's Find Out (Weekly Reader) and Science Spin magazines will not only be an additional resource for the our classroom, but also a link between school and home.

The themes that are focused upon each week are interesting. Once our discussion and activities have been completed in school, students will take the magazine home. Their excitement will continue as they go home and share the new, interesting information they have learned. They will be eager to read more magazines.
