So many of my students are writing in their school notebooks between their math problems and history notes. They are seeking ways of expressing their world through writings and arts and are the next generation of poets, authors, and illustrators. I was once like them; writing stories as soon as I got done with my classwork and taking every creative writing course available to me. That is why I am so very excited to be able to teach a brand new creative writing course next year.
This course is dual-sided, the first semester traditional creative writing and the second semester focusing on comic making and visual storytelling.
This course is designed to give both the traditional creative writing course of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction prose with the new age manga and illustrative graphic novel method of storytelling. Our school has a student population that devours manga and graphic novels in our library and so students are already making their own short comics that they like to show to one another. I am excited to encourage our students to tell stories in a variety of ways.
The few students I told about this course as I was planning it quickly told others, getting students I have not yet taught to come to talk to me about this course! They are excited to write and create meaningful stories. The funding for this project will help me get notebooks, folders, color pencils, and ink pens so my students can be ready to write their stories and create their comics, showcasing their creativity for everyone to see.
