My students need hands on material for science. PreK students need exposure to materials they can touch as much as possible to expose them to things that they can relate back to in the real world.
Using hands on experiments and activities to experience real-world life scenarios is what I do as a Science Specials Teacher at a Title 1 school for the PreK students. Students ranging in ages 4-5 years old, PreK students come to my classroom to explore and step out of the box to come up with solutions to different problems. Even the PreK Exceptional Student Education class gets a chance to get hands on with their learning. Everyone gets a chance to learn.
The students are never too young to learn to be scientists as PreK students in my science classroom.
Students get exposed to STEM through hands on activities that let them relate their everyday experiences to what is right in front of them.
These students are just beginning to learn what its like to be at school. Many of them never even leaving home before they come to our school. This is the best time to peak their interests as little scientists ready to take on the world. Not being able to read and write doesn't stop these little ones from wanting to touch, feel, smell, taste, and see their way into STEM.
My Project
4-5 years olds are very curious children at this age. With a short attention span, they need to able to touch and feel things right in front of them. With the materials that I am requesting, many projects will come alive in the classroom.
Science is the best way to expose them to hands on learning in the classroom.
For example, students will be learning about texture when touching and feeling the pom poms, pipe cleaners, and play dough. After they get to feel and touch, that's when they get a chance to create.
The students will learn about different animals and their habitats by using the models of the different stages of the insects and frogs. From their, the students will be creating Oceans in a bottle where they will take water bottles, fill it with different items found in the ocean (shells, sand, rocks, etc). From there I will add water, glitter, and a drop of blue food coloring. Seal it up with hot glue on the lid and now the students have a ocean in a bottle.
Another lesson is going to be about how plants play an important role in different habitats. Students will get a chance to plant some seeds and learn about the different parts of the plant as their plants grow.
